2005

There was a good attendance in late January at the Rugby Club for the Sleaford Striders annual Awards Presentation. Club Chairman Pete Nadin gave an excellent performance as the master of ceremonies and Club President John Holderness was on hand to present the trophies.

Graham Potter was first up to accept his reward for overall winner of the summer handicap series with Alex Heatherington the winner of the female category.

The winners of the cross country athletes of the year went to Ted Preston and Emma Lord.

Club Person of the year had some worthwhile nominees in Paul Freemantle, Steve Jackson and Julie Hanks but it went to Clive Holden for alongside his sterling work as Club Secretary his work in helping to organise the Sleaford Half Marathon and recent Loch Ness trip proved his worth to the club. He passed his Level 1 coaching qualification and worked with the juniors. His attendance at various courses has helped the Club in preparation for their Clubmark application.

Another close call was the task of finding the winner in the Endeavour category. Di Aubrey, Jo Aubrey, Pat Riches, Julie Porter and Peter Hayward all just behind Steve Jackson, winning it for working tirelessly to encourage orher club members to reach their potential but mainly for his efforts with the juniors.

Female athlete of the year went to Alex Heatherington for her brilliant 3 hours 27 minutes in the London Marathon and her splendid Triathlon achievements. Also nominated were: Pat Riches, Julie Hanks, Julie Porter and Angie Harvey. Male Athlete of the year went to Paul Freemantle for his comeback after his latest knee operation to retain his previous level of fitness and race times. His general attitude to helping others achieve their targets by training with them, giving support and telling jokes proving his character would be sorely missed.

For Endeavour

Steve Jackson - has given up a lot of persnal time to achieve level 1 and level 2 Coaching qualification. Steve has been at front of making the Club vision of a Junior Section become a reality; his commitment to this area has earned him respect from within the Club and more importantly the Community who are suddenly seeing the Club has something to offer youngsters in Ahletics.

Club Person of the Year

Clive Holden - the success of the Sleaford Half Marathon was achieved by Clive's work in setting the foundations by liasing with RAF Cranwell personal and the relevant authorities to obtain permits, etc. The Club members were able to build on these foundations to create the event we witnessed. Clive devotes a lot of time to other Club members, especially in the Junior Section and hursday training evenings when he will sacrifice a hard workout to encourage and run with other members particularly the new members.

Club Athletes of the Year

Pat Riches - her enjoyment of running was never in doubt, as was her enthusiasm, however Pat's real level of ability was un-discovered mainly because of the time devoted to encouraging other Club members and accompanying them around races. When Pat decided to run a race on her own, I think her finish times surprised even herself, and the efforts put into competing the Senior Handicap drew deserved rewards when she won the overall title; and proved to other Club members that she hid something special. A long overdue trophy appeared after the Boston Poppy 5 in a truely superb time; Pat's excursions over the longer 10 mile and half Marathon distances will pale as she talks about Folksworth 15 and London Marathon.

Alan Buckberry - a long-standing Club member who travels around the UK entering races of all distances; his times over the various distances defy his age, but his encouragement of other Club members shows his dedication to athletics and Sleaford Striders AC.
